MARQUETTE, MI - (Great Lakes Radio News) - A very special musical benefit is coming up this weekend in Marquette at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. Tom Hyslop, co-organizer of the "Kickin' The Blues" benefit concert, joined The SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to talk about the event and encourage listeners to take part. Hyslop explained that all proceeds raised at the day's events will benefit the Daniel Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Sean Costello Fund for Bipolar Research. The event will run from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and features the groups Jackpine, Flat Broke Blues Band, Travis Swanson & the Midnight Movers and direct from Chicago, Felix Reyes. There will also be 50/50 raffles, door prizes, an autographed vintage guitar raffle and a huge silent auction of  a wide array of music memorabilia. Sheriff Lovelace  joined The SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to spread the word of the local law enforcement involvement in the current national "Click It or Ticket" seat belt use enforcement effort. He also talked about some common sense driving safety tips to keep in mind as drivers are out there going into the upcoming holiday weekend. Sheriff Lovelace reminded motorists that the residual damages caused by not wearing a seat belt and getting into a crash are much too high to risk not wearing one for any reason. Kivela gave the listeners his perspective on several matters including his call for a public hearing into the recently announced plan to privatize food services in the state prison system. Kivela says there are several statistical anomalies in the selected company's proposal and other issues with their service record that give him reason to call for the hearing and further  scrutiny of the decision awarding the contract. He also talked about the House involvement in the Natural Resources Commission legislation granting them the power to classify wildlife as game animals.  In particular, he talked about the role of the U.P.'s House delegation in getting the measure through committee. MARQUETTE, MI - (Great Lakes Radio News) - A public reading and official release of  "The Way North: Collected Upper Peninsula New Works" is being held next week in Marquette. The book is a compilation of writings by people with some connection to the Upper Peninsula. John Smolens, Professor of English at NMU, and one of the writers featured in the book joined The SUNNY Morning Show today to preview the public event. Smolens says the reading will feature several of the authors from the book, including April Lindala, Ron Riekki, Marty Achatz, Janeen Rastall, L.E. Kimball, and Cameron Witbeck.  Smolens will also read one of his pieces included in the compilation. The event is being held at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library on Monday and a book sale and signings will follow the readings. MARQUETTE, MI - (Great Lakes Radio News) - The City of Marquette is currently engaged in an intensive, five-day planning process for the future of the corridor of 3rd Street. Dennis Stachewicz, Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Marquette, and Jim Tischler, Director of Community Development for the Michigan State Housing Authority, visited The SUNNY Morning Show today to discuss this unique planning process. Stachewicz explained the 3rd Street Sustainable Corridor Planning Project and the Design Charrettes that are currently going on at the Marquette Downtown Commons and how interested parties can get involved in the planning. He added that the charrettes are part of a planning process that will result in an expedited master plan for the future of the 3rd Street corridor.  This technique results in action plans within days and not months, as is usually the process. Tischler explained the concept of "placemaking" in the context of this planning as the holistic approach to looking at all aspects important to stakeholders in the future of the corridor. Simply put, the ideas and concepts about 3rd Street out there in the minds of all of the users and consumers of the corridor are valuable in the process and need to be brought to the table.  The idea is to make a well-rounded "place" to live, work, recreationally enjoy and more. MARQUETTE, MI - (Great Lakes Radio News) - Cliffs Natural Resources and the Rio Tinto Eagle Mine have entered into a two-part agreement that features a new multi-million dollar fund created to assist community-focused projects in Marquette County and improved rail line mine and mill access for the companies. The Cliffs/Rio Tinto Marquette County Community Fund will be financed by $4 million as the result of an agreement between Cliffs and Rio Tinto involving railroad access to locations around the county. The fund will provide financial assistance to major community projects focusing on education, youth, environment, health and community development. The second agreement between Cliffs, Rio Tinto and rail line operator Mineral Range Inc., allows the LS&I Railroad to gain a three-mile rail bypass near its Eagle Mills Yard. Further, Cliffs, through the LS&I Railroad,has provided to Rio Tinto the right to reactivate a 1.8-mile rail right-of-way to the Humboldt Mill, which had previously been placed in the State of Michigan’s Rails to Trails program. Mineral Range also receives the right-of-way for 12 miles of track from the Ishpeming rail yard to Humboldt Junction, previously owned by the LS&I Railroad. The agreement stipulates that a grant committee made up of two members each from Cliffs and Rio Tinto will make the decisions related to disbursement of the fund’s assets. The committee is directed to endeavor to disburse all of the money in the fund within five years.
