The U.P. Is In Blossom

Not a mystery flower for long…

Negaunee, Mi – 6-18-13 – As the weather approaches consistency in its annual identity crisis here in the U.P., signs of summer are like divine nourishment for a soul starving 9 months out of the year.

Being no expert in botany identification, I had no idea what the gorgeous purple flowers blooming in my backyard actually were. They were vaguely familiar, but I had to get outside help from my boyfriend’s mom. She lives in Maine, but the beauty of technology is such that she was looking at a picture of the flower in seconds. And she knew right away.

It’s an Iris.

A quick wiki-venture revealed this flower takes its name from the Greek word for “rainbow.” In Greek mythology, Iris was the messenger of the gods as well as the personification of the rainbow and the goddess of the sea and sky, linking humanity with the gods.

The Iris is also a perennial–another word I admit I had to look up–meaning it returns annually, for more than 2 years. So fingers crossed, it will be manifesting from heaven again in summers to come.

Since my yard is full of these beauties, I guess I should feel sufficiently linked to the heavens, at least for a little of the year.
