It’s Been a Month Already?!
After just one month of working out with a trainer for 3 days a week, I’m already seeing noticeable changes.
Marquette, Michigan – January 31, 2014 – A month ago, I started training at Synergy Fitness in Marquette. It was intimidating at first (even the stairs at the gym were intimidating), but everyone was so friendly and helpful, I feel really comfortable there now.
Taking the first step and actually going to the gym was easy compared to the month that followed.
Ab workouts and push-ups kick my butt every time. It’s when I feel like giving up that I’m grateful for the trainer that’s working with me.
Amanda, Kari, and Laura have been great motivators, “C’mon, you’ve GOT this… two more, you can do it!”
I’m always surprised to find a couple more push-ups or a tiny burst of energy when I thought I had nothing left. The encouragement makes a huge difference.
I think I’m standing up straighter now that I’ve strengthened my abdominal muscles a little.
What I See in the Mirror – I didn’t think I’d see any results in only a month. I was wrong. Really wrong.
I can see definition in bigger muscle groups. There is a visible difference in my forearms and shoulders (those awful push-ups are actually good for something, I guess). My better half says he can see a difference in my waist and back.
I am much more flexible than I was a month ago and I can also see definition in my legs when I’m working out.
The best thing that’s happened over this last month is that my lower legs have stopped swelling up throughout the day. My ankles, feet and toes aren’t puffy anymore. I really like having my ankles back!
Portion Control and… SHOES! I love food and I love my own cooking, but it’s easy to live in a drive-thru, super sized world. I used to grab breakfast or lunch on the go several times a week. I don’t think I was ever aware of the amount of takeout food I was eating or the calories I was mindlessly consuming.
I didn’t realize how many inches I lost from my waist until I saw the comparison of these two pictures.
At the beginning of the month, I really struggled with portions. I was hungry — I wanted more. I was working out and burning calories and my thought process went something like this: “I worked really hard today and I must have burned a lot of calories, so I deserve to have (whatever food I was trying to justify).” And then it hit me… I’m rewarding myself for exercising by eating MORE food.
Food is not a good reward. I know that if I eat like a pig, I’ll feel guilty and have to deal with an upset stomach as well. Besides, what’s the point of working out if you’re just going to screw it up with your eating habits? Garbage in, garbage out.
My preciousssss…. Asics Kayano’s are so comfortable. This is a great guilt-free reward.
So, I made a deal with myself: I’ll eat carefully and work out hard, then I’ll reward myself with something I really want — this month, it’s a new pair of SHOES.
The rest of the month has been easy foodwise. I’m being more mindful about eating to fuel my body, not for comfort or out of boredom.
I even avoided all kinds of goodies at the office — pizza, tacos, breakfast casseroles, tortilla chips, dips, fried cheese thingies… Talk about Temptation!
The Numbers – I said I would share my progress at the end of each month, so here are my new numbers:
Over the last month, I lost 6.8 pounds, dropping from 264.4 to 257.6 pounds. My body fat percentage dropped from 47.7% to 46.9%. I lost half an inch off my thigh measurement, 1.75 inches off my hips, and 7.25 inches off my waist.
I increased the crunches I can do in 30 seconds from 26 to 34. My heart rate decreased from 177 bpm to 167 bpm after the 3-minute cardio test, and decreased from 154 bpm to 143 bpm after 1 minute of resting.
I bench pressed 125 pounds three times last month and 125 pounds five times today – increasing my max from 134 pounds to 144 pounds. I leg pressed five reps of 360 pounds a month ago and today I did 8 reps of 420 pounds – increasing my max from 413 pounds to 525 pounds!
I think I got a pretty good start to the new year.
This first month really flew by. I appreciate the help and encouragement from the friendly staff at Synergy Fitness and also the encouragement and support of my family and friends.
I’m looking forward to new challenges and more changes over the next few months.

Nancy's days of chasing little ones around are over for now, but she looks forward to chasing grandkids around in the future (the DISTANT future). UPDATE! That first grandkid is on the way! Pretty soon Nancy's going to be chasing another little Peanut around - in fact, L'il Peanut is expected to make his or her arrival right around Thanksgiving! Until then, she'll be enjoying the quiet and shopping for her new grandchild!
