The Modeltowners won the tip and scored the first points of the basketball game to lead 2-0 over the Miners. Negaunee would respond and the game at two after making a pair of free throw shots early in the first quarter. Gwinn re-took the lead with six minutes left in the quarter to lead 4-2 against the Negaunee Miners, and would hold that score for the next few minutes.  Negaunee eventually tied it up, but Gwinn would exit the first quarter with a slim 7-6 lead over the Miners.

With six minutes left in the half, Gwinn led 14-8 and was looking to increase their lead. Junior guard Ellie Olsen handled the ball well and was able to get the ball where it needed to be, including another three-pointer from Jordyn Hutchens, giving Gwinn a nine-point lead.  As per usual, Negaunee refused to go into halftime down by double digits.  They buckled down defensively, and managed to find some holes within the Modeltowners’ defense.  Negaunee was able to close the gap to just three points, and went into halftime trailing 21-18 on Sunny.FM!

Gwinn would be first to score in the second half of the game to lead 23-18.  Two minutes into the third quarter, Negaunee cut the lead down to one on some good plays from freshman Aleda Johnson and senior Rosalie Anderson.  A free-throw from junior Alexa Olgren gave the Miners their first tie of the game since the first quarter.  Gwinn wasn’t about to let their lead slip away so easily and hit yet another three to go up 26-23 halfway throught the third.  Negaunee was determined to gain the advantage, though, and took their first lead of the night on a pair of free-throws 28-26 with three minutes left to play in the quarter.  Both teams would put one more shot in and went into the fourth quarter with the Negaunee Miners leading the Gwinn Modeltowners 30-28.

The Negaunee Miners pushed their lead to four in the first seconds of the fourth quarter.  Both teams would battle back and forth, but Negauntt still held a four-point lead, 36-32 over the Modeltowners with four minutes left to go.  Negaunee pushed their lead to six on a Rosalie Anderson jump shot from the left elbow, and went into “protect the ball” mode.  Aleda Johnson, Courtney Clickner, and Rosalie Anderson would all hit some free-throws to maintain the lead and the Negaunee Miners held on to win 47-40 against the Gwinn Modeltowners on Sunny.FM!

Leading the way for your Negaunee Miners tonight was freshman point-guard Aleda Johnson (16pts, 6reb, 4assts, 2stls) who went 12/12 from the free-throw line and sealed the deal for the Miners in her first career playoff game.  Rosalie Anderson (12pts, 7reb, stl) recovered after a shaky start and continued to be the steady force that Negaunee has come to depend on this season.  Whether she is the highest scorer or not doesn’t matter.  You know you’ll get a consistent effort and anywhere from 8-18 points every night, and that’s ideal if you’re head coach Brandon Sager.  The rest of the Miners points came from just about everywhere.  Courtney Clickner had six, Ashley Tresedder had five, Alexa Olgren had three, Courtney Finnila had two points to go along with three steals, Aubri Romback had two points, and Adena Anderson rounds out the scoring for the Miners with a lone free-throw down the stretch.

The girls will play next on Friday, February 28th at 7pm in Ishpeming against the Lady Hematites, who knocked off the Westwood Patriots following the Miners-Modeltowners game.  GO MINERS!!!!
