Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A well-known word in Upper Michigan is being officially recognized by an international dictionary.

An announcement was made today in Escanaba that the word “yooper” will be included in upcoming editions of the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

A letter writing campaign spearheaded by Delta County resident Steve Parks over the last decade resulted in the dictionary editors looking into the history and origin of the word and verifying that it was more than just regional slang.

The dictionary will officially define “yooper” as a native or resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the definition will appear in the 2014 edition of the international dictionary.
