Negaunee Selects Dan Waterman to be New Basketball Coach
The Miners selected Daniel Waterman to continue the legacy left by Mike O’Donnell & Tom Russo.
NEGAUNEE, MI – June 24th, 2014 - With Mike O’Donnell leaving for the college coaching ranks this off-season, Negaunee was left in unfamiliar territory. While there have been many speculations on who would replace the very successful O’Donnell. The speculation has ended. Negaunee has selected Westwood High School graduate & former Munising Mustang head coach Dan Waterman to lead the Miners into basketball season.
Waterman, who graduated from Westwood in 1994, led his team to the semi-finals of his senior season, losing to East Grand Rapids. He is leaving a Munising job where he led the Mustangs to a 58-13 record over the past three seasons along with two district championships.
While the Miners have lost their two best players this past season (Tyler Jandron & Eric Lori), coach Waterman will have a lot of weapons to work with. First and foremost, there’s Eric’s brother Jay Lori. The sophomore standout really came into his own last season and still has plenty of room to grow. Along with Jay is his only fellow starter from last season, Robert Loy. While Loy never really lit up the stat sheet, the talent is clearly there. In the regional final against Ironwood, Loy scored 14 points in a fantastic shooting performance. Along with Lori & Loy will be upcoming Juniors Dylan Tasson & Ben Luke and also Westwood transfer Dre Tuominen. The Miners look to be in good shape.
Be sure to tune in all football & basketball season long for your Negaunee Miners action!
