SupremeCourtMorgueMarquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – An Upper Peninsula man suspected of killing his wife in December 2013 has been bound over to Houghton County Circuit Court after being ruled competent to stand trial.

35-year-old Nima Nassiri of Dollar Bay allegedly assaulted his wife, Sanaz Nezami, who later died from the injuries she sustained.  A Houghton County Sheriff’s detective testified at his preliminary hearing that during the course of attacking her, Nassiri swept her feet out from underneath Nezami and struck her head several times against the floor.

The couple had moved to the U.P. from Los Angeles so Nazami (Age 27) could pursue a master’s degree program in environmental engineering at Michigan Tech University.

Nassiri is charged with second degree murder which carries a life sentence if found guilty.  His Circuit Court arraignment has not been scheduled yet.

Nassiri remains lodged at the Houghton County jail on a $5 million bond.
