“The Boil” in Green Cove Springs, Florida

Green Cove Springs, FL  –  February 6, 2016  –  Locals call it “The Boil”. Although that is an usual term to describe a spring, it does fit. The water rises to the surface at a rate of about 3,000 gallons a minute from about 28 feet straight down to the round opening in Green Cove Springs.

On a cool morning, splash your hand in the water and you will think it is even warmer than the constant seventy-eight degrees that it is. “The Boil” used to be the city’s water supply and some folks still stop by to refill their water bottles. But back in the day, when wealthy northerners flocked here to partake in “The Cure”, Green Cove Springs was known as the “Saratoga of the South”.

We joke that the spring was truly the Fountain of Youth sought by Ponce de Leon.  The native Timuquas found it and settled around it. Later, its nickname was Pirates Cove, as the spring provided barrels of fresh water for pirates on the high seas.
