  1. Because I was at a meeting I missed the program on gun control. For the record, Congressman Benishek received a contribution of $9,900 from the NRA. This is an e-mail I sent to Congressman Benishek in response to his quote in the 1-17-13 Mining Journal. “Your quote: ‘While I believe we need to have a national conversation about violence, our society’s values, and the state of mental health care in this country, I don’t think the President’s plan to take the guns out of the hand of responsible people is the answer.’ I continue to write to Dr. Benishek, ‘Have you actually read the Presiden’ts Plan to Protect our Children? I have not seen one word in it about denying responsible people gun ownership. I do not understand the paranoia or hysteria from the right wing. Are you all on the dole from the NRA?’ (This morning I learned Dr. Benishek is one of those on the NRA dole.) My e-mail message to Dr. Benishek continues, ‘You talk about society’s values. You are a physician, you are in a position of leadership. Where are your social values? Do only Mothers understand the immediate need for action to protect our little, innocent children from gun violence? A brief outline of the President’s plan is as follows: 1) close background check loopholes to keep guns out of dangerous hands; 2) ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and taking other common-sense steps to reduce gun violence; 3)MAKE SCHOOLS SAFER; 4) increase access to mental health srvices. Little children should not have to be afraid to go to school or go outside for recess. The time for action to support President Obama’s 23 Executive Actions for Dun Violence is now, Congressman Dr. Benishek!’ Mark Shields on the PBS Newshour (1-18-13) reported, “Martin Luther King was 39, Robert Kennedy was 42. That’s–42 years after being shot, 1,260,703 Americans died in firearms–by firearms. In the total history of the United States in every year, in the Revolutionary, all the world’s wars, 659,000 Americans have died in combat, twice as many in one-fifth the time.” 1,260,703 Americans died due to gun violence and we supposedly live in a civilized nation?

  2. Correction in quote from Mark Shields, my apology. “Martin Luther King was 39, Robert Kennedy was 42. That’s–42 years after their being shot, 1,260,703 Americans died in firearms–by firearms. In the total history of the United States in every WAR, in the Revolutionary, all the world’s wars, 659,000 Americans have died in combat, twice as many in one-fifth the time.”
