Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is now the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American adults. When treated at an early stage, the five-year survival rate is 90 percent. But for those cases in which the cancer has spread, the survival rate drops significantly, so knowing the signs and being proactive in getting a diagnosis is important.
You can help prevent colon cancer by limiting your intake of red meat and alcohol; eating generous amounts of vegetables and fiber; drinking green tea regularly; and taking a multivitamin containing vitamin D. It’s also important if you have a family history of colon cancer or are over the age of 50 that you have regular screenings – talk with your doctor for more information, and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:
1. A change in your bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation, as well as any change in the consistency of your stool.
2. Bloody stools or rectal bleeding.
3. Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as gas, pain or cramps.
4. A feeling that your bowel isn’t completely emptying.
5. Weakness, fatigue or unexplained weight loss.
