Noun: Allusion  (uh-LOO-zhun)

Definition:

1. An implied or indirect reference especially in literature; also the use of such references.

2. The act of making an indirect reference to something.

Sample sentence:  Speaking with characteristic bluntness after his promotion was announced, Sgt. Zimmer said he wanted to be the chief of police, but not of the Godfather structures within, an allusion to the force’s  problems with corruption.
