International Space Station

Dan Hewitt reported that nine crew members packed the orbital laboratory to work on various projects including research on muscle loss, readying small satellites to be deployed, conducting Earth observations and driving rovers from a space control panel. On Sept. 11, Andreas Mogenson and Aidyn Aimbetov were sent home with Gennady Padalka, who has spent 879 days in space, more than anybody in history. Scott Kelly replaced Padlaka on Sept. 5 and will keep the position until his year-long mission is up in March.

The expected year long data download for NASA’s new horizon spacecraft started. It will have a higher resolution to observe the diversity and complexity of the Pluto system. Early imagery revealed possible dunes, ice flows that came from mountainous regions, ice lakes and networks of valleys. Image download has more than doubled Pluto’s resolution by 140 yards per pixel.

A memorial event for the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on New York’s World Trade Center was held at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The event at the center’s Fire Station 1, paid tribute to the 343 fire and rescue personnel who lost their lives during the attack. A piece of the World Trade Center also was also on display at the ceremony. On that day, 14 years ago – astronaut Frank Culbertson – the only American off the planet at that time, captured footage of the aftermath from the International Space Station.
