Marquette, MichiganSaturday, January 9, 2016 –What better way to warm up in the middle of an Upper Peninsula winter than playing the ukulele? The first annual “Yooper Uke Week”, presented by the Hiawatha Music Co-op will feature a concert with Ben Hassenger, “Michigan’s Ambassador of the Ukulele”, on Wednesday night at the Ore Dock, a Thursday evening public strum, appearances at local schools, Friday night show at Cognition Brewery in Ishpeming, Saturday workshops with Jim’s Music, and a Saturday evening show at the Falling Rock Cafe in Munising.

Wednesday, January 20, 7 – 9:00 pm
Warm Up Wednesday @ Ore Dock Brewing Company
114 W. Spring Street, Marquette
“Michigan’s Ambassador of the Ukulele”, Ben Hassenger, will perform in concert as part of Hiawatha’s Warm-Up Wednesday Concert Series. Bring your uke! ($5 donation at the door.)

Thursday, January 21, 7 – 9:00 pm
Ukulele Strum & Sing @ Peter White Public Library
217 N. Front Street, Marquette
An ukulele group strum and sing is always a fun time! Enjoy the most social of instruments; sing, play, and meet new friends. Bring your uke or borrow one of our own (quantities limited). Co-sponsored by the Marquette Arts and Culture Center.

Classes and concert at Sandy Knoll Elementary. (Not open to the public.)

Ukulele Workshops @ Hiawatha Music Co-op

Learn to play the ukulele or brush up on your skills in these fun and informative workshops, co-presented by Jim’s Music. Bring your uke or borrow one of ours. ($15 in advance from Hiawatha or at the door, space is limited.)

About Ben Hassenger: Ben’s grandfather and father (both also named Ben Hassenger) were born in Marquette. Son Ben has traveled to the family home near Deer Lake in Ishpeming from his hometown of Lansing since he was a baby, visiting his grandparents and later his parents who moved there when they retired. Ben is known as “Michigan’s Ukulele Ambassador”; hosting various festivals, uke groups, workshops, and other events across the Lower Peninsula and is pleased to bring the joy of the uke to his favorite part of the state.
