da Upper Yoopers’ Barbershop+ Chorus Singing Valentines on the 8th Day

Marquette, Michigan – Pete Stephens-Brown, musical director of the da Upper Yoopers’ Barbershop+ Chorus, returned to the 8th Day at the Sunny studios to talk about Valentines Day Serenades as well as a bit about the upcoming SpringFlingSing 2018. For another year lovers of all kinds can call 906-361-8308 or Email upperyoopers@gmail.com or go online at www.upperyoopers.org to order a singing valentine from da Upper Yoopers’ Barbershop+ Chorus.  For 10 hours on February 14th, the members of the chorus will travel around Marquette county to deliver Singing Valentines to “share some love with spouses/significant others, friends, relatives or co-workers.”

Deluxe package includes one (1)  song sung in person, chocolate, a rose, and a photo to capture the memory.  Their $25 E-Valentine package features one (1) song sung using phone or other device such as Skype or Facetime.  Participants can chose among five songs: Heart of my Heart, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Irish Blessing, Tell Me Why, and My Wild Irish RoseWill You Marry Me may also available but removed from their previous list, since it was deemed — humorously — as too leading. Interested parties can call as late as Valentine’s Day to order.  All funds go to support the non-profit da Upper Yoopers’ Barbershop+ Chorus.

In the previous two years, the chorus has serenaded babies, grandmas, dogs, and the packages are perfect not only for new lovers but also anniversaries and

reunions or just an opportunity to say something special.  It is, as Mr. Brown said, not traditional physical gift but a “special” memory.  The most popular song requested has been Let Me Call You Sweetheart.

Pete Stephens-Brown said the Chorus now has 12 local members and 9 non-local members.  The Barbershop Chorus Valentine Serenade concept started years years ago when Mr. Brown was in college.  The reason they have a plus “+” is because they go beyond the traditional barbershop.  Not just a quartet, women part of the chorus, and music includes dabbling in many genres.

Pete Stephens-Brown also mentioned the Chorus SpringFlingSing 2018 coming 3:00pm, Sat, Apr 28 2018 at Lake Superior Christian Church on 393 State Highway M553 Marquette, MI 49855.  The afterglow party, which includes a meal and cash bar, will feature singing as well and be held at VFW in Gwinn, Michigan.  As with the Singing Valentines, the SpringFlingSing 2018 will support da Upper Yoopers’ Barbershop+ Chorus “mission to increase harmony in communities, its purpose to raise funds to support local schools’ chorus and singing programs, and its vision to be THE visible, vigorous, vibrant, vocal, virtuosic presence in Marquette County and beyond.”

Every year the chorus sponsors another school or program, starting in their first year with Negaunee Schools Elementary Choir.  Last year they sponsored Ishpeming High School Choir, and this year they are sponsoring the Gwinn Choir.

If you want to learn more about    drop in at their Rehearsal venue Thursdays at 6:15p at the First United Methodist Church on 111 E. Ridge Street in Marquette. Their facebook pages is https://www.facebook.com/upperyoopers/.
