Chris Alquist 8th Day Interview about Bergonzi Quartet Children’s Concert at Portage Lake District Library June 23rd

Houghton, MI – Community Programs Director Chris Alquist of the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton came on the 8th Day Radio Show to discuss the Bergonzi String Quartet free children’s concert coming to her library Saturday, June 23, at 2:00 p.m as part of the 2018 season (June 15-30) of the Pine Mountain Music Festival.  Over the years the Bergonzi Quartet “has introduced thousands of children to classical music in their engaging and entertaining children’s programs over the years.”

Todd Pazz and Chris Alquist also discussed the community value of libraries in the 21st century, services offered at the Portage Lack District Library, and select upcoming events at the library.  The Library is located at 58 Huron St. Houghton, Michigan. On Saturday the group will play a variety of classical and popular music on violins, a viola, and a cello that was chosen for their appeal to young audiences. Kids will be able to interact with the musicians afterwards and ask questions about their music and instruments.

The Bergonzi String Quartet has been Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Miami in Florida since 1992, and its members are Scott Flavin, Ross Harbaugh, Karen Lord Powell, and Laura Wilcox. The members have extensive collective experience, performing in virtually every major center in the world, with concerts throughout Europe, North and South America, New Zealand, and Asia. The quartet has generated enormous excitement around the world for their superb blend of seasoned and sensitive virtuosity and is an important cultural asset for the Pine Mountain Music Festival and the Upper Peninsula.

There is no admission for this concert and all are welcome to attend.

Also, there will be non-free concert at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on the Michigan Technological University 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton,  Saturday, June 23 at 7:30 pm.  Previous non-free concerts this week in Marquette at Northern Michigan University’s Reynolds Hall on June 20th, and in Iron Mountain at the Immaculate Conception Church June 21st.

Houghton High School Key Club members will offer summer Storytimes for kids on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Kids are invited to join the fun!  Storytime, Presented by Key Club Members Saturdays: June 23, July 14, July 28, August 11 and August 25, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
