The opening tip off was won by the Negaunee Miners, and they drove to the basket for a quick lay-up and two early points. The Miner girls jumped out to an early lead, thanks to some excellent ball movement and court awareness. Clara Johnson played very well in the first quarter, coming-up big on defense on multiple occasions. Negaunee jumped out to an early lead with a score of 10-3 with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. The Miners continued to play well in the first quarter, advancing their lead to 16-7 at the end of the first.

The Negaunee Miners started the second quarter off with the ball, and they looked to keep up the scoring of the first quarter. Aleda Johnson drained a three-pointer early in the quarter to extend the Miners lead over the Emeralds. The Manistique Emeralds did their best to make a comeback, but the Miners’ tough defense held the Emeralds’ scoring to a minimum. Fouls, however, seemed to be the main problem for Manistique, allowing the Miners extend their lead. Negaunee also had their own foul troubles, with more than one player coming close to foul trouble before the end of the first half. Abby Nelson had a nice lay-up through the tough Manistique defense to extend Negaunee’s lead to 31-11 with just over one minute left in the first half.

First Half Score:
Negaunee Miners: 33
Manistique Emeralds: 11

To start the second half of play, the Negaunee Miners again were able to win the tip-off, and a quick lay-up made the score 35-11 early in the third. Fouls continued to be a problem for the Manistique Emeralds, as the Miners took that advantage of their mistakes to move ahead 39-11. Hailey Fezatt weaved her way through the Emeralds’ defense to score on a nice lay-up and extend the Miners’ lead with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Manistique Emeralds did their best to get back into the game, scoring six straight points and closing the gap between the two teams with one minute left in the quarter.

The final quarter of play opened with the Manistique Emeralds in control of the ball, but Aleda Johnson came up big on defense, blocking a shot and giving control of the ball back to the Negaunee Miners. Emily Grant had a great play on a lay-up two minutes into the quarter where she was able to score two and an extra point thanks to a foul. Lynsee Dempsey had a great game under the basket for the Miners, with multiple rebounds and six points.
