Negaunee Miner Girls Basketball – Negaunee (41) VS Ishpeming (45) on Sunny 101.9 WKQS

The Negaunee Miners look to take the District crown as they battle with rival Ishpeming. The teams split in the regular season, as the Miners look to take the third and final game. Heather Seppanen has your call here on Sunny 101.9 WKQS.

Negaunee, Michigan– Ishpeming strikes first with 6:42 remaining, as they jump out to a 3-0 lead. Both defenses are locked in,  as the Miners remain scoreless three minutes into the first quarter. With 4:30 remaining in the first, the Miners trail 4-0. Kayla Hakala drops a 3-pointer to pull the Miners within one, 4-3. Negaunee scores on the ensuing possession, as they now trail 6-5. The Hematites have opened up a 10-5 lead, with a minute left in the quarter.

First quarter:

Negaunee: 5      Ishpeming: 10

The Miners score first in the second quarter, as they cut the Hematite lead to 10-7. Taylor Wilber scores, bringing the Miners within one. Wilber scores again, as Negaunee is finding their offense early in the second quarter. After taking a 14-11 lead, Ishpeming calls a timeout. Taylor Wilber drains a 3-pointer, to keep Negaunee within a possession. The Hematites lead 17-16. The Miners look to get the last shot of the half, as both teams continue to battle in a physical game.

Halftime score:

Negaunee: 16        Ishpeming: 19

Negaunee scores first in the third quarter, as they cut the Ishpeming lead to 19-18. With 5:10 left in the third quarter, Negaunee trails 23-18. Ashley Veale scores for Negaunee to keep the game close, as they trail 23-20 midway through the third quarter. The Miners hit a 3-pointer as they close the gap to 25-23. Ashley Veale hits a lay-up as the Miners knot the game up at 25-25 with under two minutes left in the third quarter. Veale splits a pair from the line, as the Miners trail by one with under a minute to play.

Third quarter:

Negaunee: 26      Ishpeming: 27

Ishpeming gets on the board first in the fourth quarter, as they take a 3-point lead; 29-26 with just under seven minutes left in the game. Ishpeming is leading 31-26 with just over five minutes left in the game. The Miners are looking to make a run and take their first lead of the game. After a Rosalie Anderson lay-up the Miners trail 34-28. Taylor Wilber cuts to the lane and scores, as Negaunee looks to keep the game close, trailing by four points with under four minutes left in the game. Rosalie Anderson hits a pair from the line to pull Negaunee within two points, as the Miners put on the full court press with under two minutes to play. Ishpeming returns with a pair from the line to retake a four point lead. Taylor Wilber scores, making it 36-34 with a minute left to play. Ashely Veale hits a pair at the charity stripe to keep Negaunee within two points of the Hematites. Rosie Anderson makes a bucket while getting fouled. Making the free throw, Anderson and the Miners cut the Ishpeming lead to one, with 37 seconds left. With 15 seconds left the Miners have brought it within one point.
