Negaunee, MI – Negaunee continued it’s dominance on both sides of the ball last Friday night, notching a convincing 36-8 victory over MPC rival Iron Mountain. While Negaunee dominated the scoreboard, it wasn’t the statistical onslaught that the Miners have had so far this year. Negaunee’s defense simply stifled the Mountaineer offensive attack, holding them to a combined 110-yards.
On offense, the Miners had a balanced attack utilizing different runners and throwing the ball when necessary. The Miners had three rushers eclipse the 30-yard mark, and for the first time this season, Tyler LaJoie didn’t lead the pack. Austin Caya, with the help of a 48-yard touchdown (his second of the night), led the Miners with 62-yards rushing. Tyler LaJoie and Zak Harsila added 56-yards and 34-yards respectively, each also contributed a touchdown to the cause. Ryan Syrjala went three for four, including a long touchdown pass to Tyler Jandron during the second quarter. Negaunee went into halftime leading 36-0 leading to a running clock for much of the second half. The Mountaineers did manage to put the ball in the end zone late in the fourth quarter, but the game was well out of reach by that point.
The Miners will continue their MPC schedule in Gwinn this Friday night against the Modeltowners. Gwinn is coming off of a loss at home against Bark River-Harris 34-6. The Modeltowners have had their ups and downs starting out their season with a win against Gladstone followed by a loss against Iron Mountain, a win against Manistique, and the most recent loss vs. Bark River-Harris. If there’s a pattern there, they’re due for a win. However, the buzz around the MPC is that Gwinn will need to play a mistake-free game, and probably need to have the ball bounce their way a few times to secure a win over the Miners.
