Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball during their 32-30 win over Ishpeming on 1/20/14

Another week down, another successful week for the Miner machine.  The boys and girls went a combined 2-1 including a big win for the girls in Ishpeming last Monday.  In that particular rivalry game, Negaunee was led offensively by senior leader Rosalie Anderson and on defense by sophomore Courtney Finnila who had three clutch steals as the game neared its end.  The Miners were successful against the Lady Hematites due to their impressive press-break which only flustered the Miners a few times during the third quarter en route to their 32-30 victory.  The Miners weren’t able to maintain their level of play throughout their non-conference game against the Escanaba Lady Eskimos however.  Despite leading for much of the game, Negaunee wasn’t able to hit the shots they needed to so that they could come out on top.  Escanaba managed to create havoc for the Miners down the stretch when they needed to and ended up coming out on top 51-44.  The girls are now 7-5 with eight games remaining.

The boys also had two games this week, both MPC wins:  One at home against Iron Mountain, and one in Manistique against the Emeralds.  In the first game of the week, Negaunee struggled at first against the Mountaineers’ zone defense, but eventually was able to figure it out as Tyler Jandron & Jay Lori chipped in 18-points apiece for the Miners 62-51 victory.  The Miners second game wasn’t much of a game at all, as Negaunee dominated the Emeralds 68-23 behind Eric Lori’s 15 points and Tyler Jandron’s phenomenal defense.  Also contributing for the Miners was junior forward Robert Loy, who threw in 12 points of his own.  In a game where everybody played, the likes Michael Hemmila, Michael Anderson, Doug Lindblom, and Logan Streeter all got to contribute big minutes in the second half.  The boys managed to improved to 10-1 on the year.
