Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball defeats Ishpeming Hematites (55-48) on Sunny FM

Ishpeming, Michigan02/10/2018– The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team traveled to Ishpeming to take on the Hematites. The Girls came into this game a perfect 16-0 while the Hematites were 14-2. Brady Guilbault and Jesse Anderson brought you all of the play-by-play action on Sunny FM.

The Miners won the tip-off to start off the game. Madigan Johns scored the first two points of the ball game for the Hematites. Clara Johnson took control for Negaunee and the Miners held a four point lead half-way through the first. Natalie Bartle tied the game up at the end of the first with a score of 11-11. The second quarter was just as close as the first quarter. Ishpeming handled the ball really well towards the end of the second half and at half-time they held the two point lead over Negaunee, 21-19.

After battling for the lead, Clara Johnson started to take control of the game for the Miners and made some really big clutch buckets. Both Natalie Bartle and Clara Johnson were making some great three point plays and at the end of the third quarter, the Miners took back the lead 38-35. During the fourth quarter, the battle was intense. Negaunee went into the double bonus and the two Ishpeming players, Katie Lohman and Mariah Austin, were both fouled out of the game. With a lot of free-throws for both teams, it was anyone’s game. With just a few minutes left in the game, Natalie Bartle scored with her free throws and last two points of the game and kept the Miners victorious. After the hard fought game, the Miners came out with a win over the Hematites 55-48. The Girls also found out that they and the J.V. Miners team are now clenching the NPC titles.

STATS: Natalie Bartle led the scoring for the Miners with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 assists. Clara Johnson followed behind her with 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Abby Nelson had 6 points with 2 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block. Chloe Norman scored 4 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Scoring 2 points was MacKenzie Karki (2 steals) and Ielee Shiroda (1 rebound, 1 steal). To round off the scoring for the Miners, Hannah Voskuhl scored 1 point with 1 rebound.
