A Miner shoots!

Gwinn, Michigan02/13/2018– The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team traveled to Gwinn this Tuesday night to take on the ModelTowners. The Girls came into this game a perfect 17-0 while the ModelTowners were 8-10. Since it was a Tuesday, the state scoring was updated and Negaunee moved to #3 in the state! Brady Guilbault and Jesse Anderson had all of the play-by-play action for you on Sunny FM.

It was senior night in Gwinn and as a wonderful show of sportsmanship, the Gwinn seniors handed carnations to the Negaunee seniors and that set a nice tone for the rest of the night. The ModelTowners won the tip-off to start the game. Trisha McGuire, of Gwinn, scored the first two points of the game. Abby Nelson followed up, for Negaunee, with two points of her own right in the face of Tierra Taylor. Negaunee was having a little bit of trouble with fouls early on. Abby Nelson led the scoring in the first quarter and held the lead for the Miners with 11-6 at the end of one. The rebounding got better for the Miners in the second half of the game and that really reflected on the scoreboard. Ielee Shiroda had more play time in the second half of the game for the Miners and she did really well scoring points for Negaunee. The Miners held 12 points lead over the ModelTowners at half-time with a score of 23-11.

There wasn’t much scoring for the Miners or the ModelTowners in the third quarter. The third was full of fouls for both teams. Natalie Bartle, Miner, received her fourth foul of the game in the third. 29-16 was the score at the end of three as the Miners led the ModelTowners. Gwinn really started to fight back and play hard in the fourth quarter. It almost looked like the ModelTowners wanted to win more than the Miners. Natalie Bartle scored a couple of points and made a few free-throws but the ModelTowners had a play set up to get Natalie Bartle fouled out of the game for Negaunee and that is what happened fairly early on in the fourth. Mallory Delmont scored a three pointer for Gwinn but Abby Nelson answered right back with a three pointer of her own for Negaunee. Negaunee went into a double-double and the free-throws made just gave the Miners that much more of a lead. 45-33 was the score at the end of the game as the Miners stay victorious with a now 18-0 record on the season. The Miners Girls Basketball team are now the NPC champs!
