Homecoming Night in Negaunee – The Miners Take Down The L’Anse Purple Hornets 40-6 on SunnyFM

Negaunee, MichiganFriday, September 28th, 2018 – It was Homecoming night in Negaunee and the energy was high as the Negaunee Miners played the L’Anse Purple Hornets for the first time since 1947, beating them with a final score of 40-6. Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson were in Negaunee to bring all of the live action to 101.9 SunnyFM.

The game started off with a L’Anse kick to the Miners. It took a few minutes for the action to really get underway, with Negaunee’s Drew DuShane getting a good drive, bringing the ball to the Purple Hornet 31-yard line. Not long after, Negaunee’s Jason Waterman received a tremendous block, allowing him to drive the ball into the end zone. The kick was good, bringing the Miners to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. Shortly after the Purple Hornets had the ball, it was fumbled and picked up by the Miners. This turnover then led to a Negaunee touchdown scored by Eric Etlemaki. The kick was good, bringing the first quarter score to a 14-0 Miners lead.

The action was quick to begin at the start of the second quarter, with L’Anse’s Devan Funke scoring a touchdown right away. The extra point was no good, bringing the score to 14-6, with the Miners still in the lead. Not long after, Negaunee’s Jason Waterman made magic happen again by scoring his second touchdown of the night. The extra-point try on that was good, bringing the Miners to a 21-6 lead. Shortly after gaining the possession of the ball, the Purple Hornets fumbled again, with the Miners picking up the turnover. Negaunee’s Jason Waterman then went on to score his third touchdown, bringing the Miners to a 27-6 lead. Later on, the Miners and the Purple Hornets went back and forth on turnovers, but there was no more scoring for the second quarter. The Miners had the 27-6 lead going into halftime.

Negaunee’s Eric Salminen started the third quarter with a kick to L’Anse. The Purple Hornets were unable to get back on the board as the Miners took possession of the ball. Negaunee’s Peyton Anderson went on to score a three-yard touchdown blast, with which the kick was good, bringing the Miners to a 34-6 lead. Shortly after Anderson’s touchdown, Negaunee’s Eric Etlemaki went on to score his second touchdown of the game, bringing the Miners to a 40-6 lead to wrap up the third quarter.

L’Anse started off the fourth quarter with a touchdown that was quickly revoked due to an illegal formation. The teams went back and forth with some good drives and first downs, but neither team was able to get back on the board. The Miners ended up beating the Purple Hornets 40-6 for a sweet Homecoming win!
