Manistique, MIDecember 28, 2018 – The Negaunee Miners boys basketball team came out of the holiday break with a 56-42 win over the Manistique Emeralds on Friday night in a game that was broadcast live on Sunny FM by the voice of the Miners, Jesse Anderson.  Negaunee, coming off a 55-47 loss to the Marquette Redmen exactly one week prior, was glad to get back onto the court and get back to their winning ways against Manistique.

The Emeralds got on the board first early in the first quarter, but Negaunee quickly answered and tied the game at 2 points apiece in the opening 30 seconds of play.  The two offenses went back and forth in the first quarter, but neither team was able to find a substantial edge over the other until the Miners took a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Miners got another early basket to begin the second quarter to go up 17-10, and although the Emeralds quickly hit a three-pointer to cut into the deficit, Negaunee responded with a basket of their own to make the score 19-13 in favor of the Miners.  Negaunee was able to extend their lead to 24-15, and that’s where the teams stood at the half.

Both teams came out strong in the second half, and they traded points in the early stages of the third quarter.  The Emeralds looked for a time like they might be able to push back and tie the game, but Negaunee’s defense played well, allowing the Miners’ offense to keep pressure on Manistique and maintain a 40-29 lead through three quarters.

Manistique began the final quarter with determination, and early on it looked again like they might make a push and draw within a few points.  Negaunee’s defense again proved to be equal to the task, however, and the Miners walked away with a 56-42 win.

Leading the way offensively for the Miners was Jakson Sager with 26 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist, making him the MI Internet Company Player of the Game!

The Negaunee Miners‘ next game will be on Thursday, January 3, as the boys host the Houghton Gremlins.  That game is scheduled to tip off at 7:15 P.M., so join Jesse Anderson for all the action right here on Sunny FM, your home for Negaunee Miners sports.
