Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball falls to the Gladstone Braves 68-54 on Sunny 101.9FM

Negaunee, MIJanuary 17th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team took the court on a cold Thursday night, as they faced the Gladstone Braves. Jesse Anderson had the call for all of the great action between the Miners and Braves on Sunny 101.9FM!

1st Half:

Negaunee would start off the scoring, as a three-pointer in the first minute gave the Miners an early 3-0 lead. Negaunee came out with a half-court trap defensively, as they wanted to put pressure on the Braves. The scoring would pick up from there, as with just under five minutes remaining in the first, the Miners led 10-4. Gladstone would battle back, this game became a shootout quickly as the Miners led 13-11 with under two minutes left in the opening quarter. The Braves would tie up the game with a late basket, and the score was even at 13 after one quarter of play.

End of 1st: Negaunee Miners 13, Gladstone Braves 13

The Miners were struggling at the beginning of the quarter, as the Braves came out in a full-court trap. Negaunee found themselves trailing 21-15 with six minutes to go in the second quarter. Both teams would trade baskets, and Gladstone led 26-19 with three minutes remaining in the half. The Miners were starting to struggle from the three point line, but part of that was caused by the Gladstone defense. The defense would pick up towards the end of the half, but not before the Braves would score five unanswered points in the final minute. Gladstone led Negaunee 32-21 heading into the locker room.

2nd Half:

Both teams came out of halftime scoring, as the Braves led 38-28 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Braves quickly scored six straight points to take a 44-28 lead. Negaunee would strike back with a three, but Gladstone would respond with an and-one. The Braves were on fire from the floor, they were responding to every Negaunee bucket. With three minutes to go in the third quarter, the Miners trailed 51-35. Gladstone was very impressive on offense, they presented a challenge at every position against Negaunee’s defense. The Miners were beginning to hit shots once again, they were very effective on offense, but Gladstone was responding each and every time. Negaunee kept battling, but found themselves trailing by 16 points heading into the fourth quarter.

End of 3rd: Gladstone Braves 59, Negaunee Miners 43

The final quarter started off at a slow pace, as both teams were scoreless in the first two minutes of the quarter. The Miners would hit a three to cut the lead to 13, but Gladstone came right back once again with a three-pointer of their own. The lead was at 16 once again, Gladstone was scorching the nets at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium. Both teams were trading baskets, and time for a Negaunee comeback was running out. The Braves had good ball movement, as they were trying to run out the game clock. Negaunee trailed by 16 points with two minutes remaining, and their hopes of coming back to win this game, were dashed. The Gladstone Braves took the road win over the Negaunee Miners by a score of 68-54.
