Negaunee, Michigan Thursday August 31st, 2017 – The Negaunee Miners Football team played their first game of the season tonight against the Calumet Copper Kings.  Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson were there to bring you all the gridiron action LIVE on Sunny.FM.

The Calumet Copper Kings received the ball to start the game but fumbled and Jason Waterman was able to recover the ball for a Miners possession.  The Negaunee Miners took the opportunity of the possession and marched the ball down the field.  Jake Hill was able to carry the ball into the end zone for a touchdown and Erik Salminen kicked in the extra point to give the Miners a 7-0 lead.   The Calumet Copper Kings scored on their next drive, but failed on the 2 point conversion and the Miners maintained a one point lead 7-6.

The Calumet Copper Kings had possession of the ball to start the second quarter and they were able to convert the drive into a touchdown and took a 12-6 lead over the Negaunee Miners.  The Negaunee Miners had one drive in the second quarter, but were unable to convert he possession into points. The Miners played great defensively and kept the Kings from scoring the remainder of the second quarter on Sunny.FM.

The Negaunee Miners received the ball to start the second half of play and capitalized on the possession with a touchdown from Jason Waterman.  Erik Salminen kicked for the extra point and the Miners regained the lead against the Calumet Copper Kings 14-12.  The Miners defense was able to stop the Kings early on their first drive and regain possession of the ball.  Eric Etelamaki was able to score a touchdown for the Miners and Erik Salminen did his magic again scoring the extra point, to put the Miners up 21-12.  The Calumet Copper Kings scored a touchdown late in the third quarter, but still trailed the Miners 21-20 going into the fourth quarter on Sunny.FM.

Both teams battled hard defensively, trading possession back and forth to throughout the fourth quarter.  The Calumet Copper Kings gained possession of the ball with 1:30 left on the clock and were able to convert the drive into a touchdown and scored the 2 points conversion. The Negaunee Miners fell to the Calumet Copper Kings 28-21.
