MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Northern Michigan University Archives are presenting the latest in their “Evening at the Archives” series on Thursday, October 18th at the archives at NMU.

University Archivist Marcus Robyns joined the SUNNY Morning SHow with Walt & Mike this morning for a preview of the event.

Robyns said Professor James McCommons will briefly describe his discovery at the University of Pittsburgh of the papers, letters and unfinished autobiography of George Shiras III, a pioneer in wildlife photography and an important conservationist in the early 20th century.

Robyns explained how the materials came to be donated by the University of Pittsburgh to the NMU archives in 2011.

McCommons will conclude the evening with a presentation on Shiras’ involvement in the creation of the Migratory Bird Act through active correspondence with President Theodore Roosevelt.
