MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The increasing presence of meth in Marquette County and across the Upper Peninsula has resulted in tougher stances in investigating and prosecuting those caught manufacturing or possessing the drug.

Assistant United States Attorney Maarten Vermaat and Marquette County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Wiese joined The SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to talk about measures their offices are taking to work to eradicate meth production and use in our region.

Vermaat said that one of the key steps in the successful prosecution of meth-related crimes in the region is the inter-agency cooperation he is finding across the U.P.   He said the way the local law enforcement and prosecutorial divisions in Upper Michigan work together with his federal efforts are leading to success.

Wiese says one of the key ways to put a stop to the issue of meth is to continue to educate the public to make them aware of the myriad of risks associated with the production and use of meth.

Wiese adds that another key step is to gather enough legislative support to develop laws in Michigan that would require a prescription for possession of ephedrine and its related products.  Ephedrine is the key component in the production of meth and being able to keep tabs on those who possess it would be a major step in stopping it’s illegal production.
