Marquette City Commission Called On To Defend MGH Tax Valuation
Marquette City Manager Bill Vajda
Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Marquette City Commission is voting tonight on the hiring of extra legal counsel to respond to a tax valuation challenge by Marquette General Hospital.
The agenda item comes after officials with M-G-H requested a state tax tribunal hearing disputing the tax valuation placed on the hospital’s property as determined during the sale process of the facility to Duke-LifePoint.
In an interview with The SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike last week, Marquette City Manger Bill Vajda said city officials arrived at the tax value through due diligence exercised while the proposed purchase of M-G-H was under review by MI Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office and they are standing by the figure.
Vajda says the city spent $75,000 over the six-month pre-sale process in conjunction with the A-G’s office determining the number and now may have to spend an additional $100,000 to defend it in the dispute.
Tonight’s City Commission meeting gets under way at 7:00 o’clock at Commission Chambers at City Hall in Marquette.
