Election Results For Tuesday, 3/8/2016

Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was the winner in Tuesday’s Michigan Democratic presidential primary. Several polls had former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with the advantage heading into the election, but Sanders was able to close the gap and squeeze out a narrow win. Leading up to the election, Sanders stressed that increased voter turnout would be key to his success. Donald Trump took home a win and a share of Michigan’s Republican delegates yesterday. Texas Senator Ted Cruz finished second in Michigan’s presidential primary after leapfrogging Ohio Governor John Kasich late in the night. Kasich wound up finishing third while Florida Senator Marco Rubio finished a distant fourth.

Several local millage proposals were decided by voters yesterday as well. Here are some of the results:

In Marquette County, the Forsyth Township Library millage proposal was defeated by a vote of 713 NO to 687 YES.

In Alger County, the Burt Township School millage request was passed by a vote of 194 YES to 25 NO.

In Schoolcraft County, the Thompson Township Road funding propsal was defeated by a vote of 128 NO to 114 YES.

In Luce County, a millage request for funding of Luce County Sheriff Department operations passed 938 YES to 497 NO.

In Baraga County, the L’Anse Township Ambulance funding request passed 618 YES to 183 NO and the L’Anse Township Fire Department request passed 615 YES to188 NO.

In Houghton County, voters passed all three millage proposals by comfortable margins. Proposal 1 passed 501 YES to 275 NO, Proposal 2 passed 587 YES to 227 NO and Proposal 3 passed 693 YES to 117 NO.
