Rolling Stones Trombonist Headlines NMU Jazz Festival

    Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The annual NMU Jazz Festival is coming up this week on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

    Festival organizer and Professor of Music at NMU, Dr. Mark Flaherty, joined the SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike this week to preview the events.

    Flaherty said his year’s festival will feature trombonist/composer Michael Davis, who is widely known as the trombonist for the Rolling Stones since 1994.

    He also toured and recorded with Frank Sinatra from 1988 to 1994, and he has released 9 solo CDs.

    Flaherty said events kick off with the Opening Concert on Thursday at the Reynolds Recital Hall on campus featuring the Marquette Senior High School Jazz Band and the NMU Faculty & Friends Jazz Combo.

    Then on Friday, there will be High School and Middle School Band/Combo Performances and Clinics as well as jam sessions and Guest Artist clinics all day on campus.

    The events wrap up with the Festival Concert at 7:30 p.m. at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette featuring Michael Davis with the NMU Jazz Band & the NMU Jazz Combo.
