Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) -The City of Marquette has closed Seventh Street between Fisher Street and U.S. 41 until further notice for a water main break.

Marquette City Manager Bill Vajda says that there is no access to Seventh Street from U.S. 41 as a result of this substantial break.

The Department of Public Works closed the street early this morning after a 16-inch main water service line was discovered to have been ruptured.

Seventh Street asphalt separated from the curb with water flowing underneath.

Water flooding from the pipe caused extensive damage underneath the asphalt surface of Seventh Street, rendering the section of the street unusable by motor vehicles.

Vajda added that crews are working in conjunction with the DNR and DEQ to ensure any possible contamination to the nearby Whetstone Creek will be mitigated.

The crews hope to have the street in a temporarily usable state by this evening.
