My First Experiences as a “Hockey Mom”

Negaunee, MichiganOctober 29, 2018 – Well, I’m getting a good taste of what it’s like to be a “Hockey Mom!” My 7-year-old son Holden and my 4-year-old nephew Titan, are both in the Learn to Skate program with the Iron Range Hockey Association in Negaunee. It is adorable, and frightening at the same time.

They both are so cute in their hockey gear! I honestly had no idea how much gear is actually worn and used during hockey until they started, though. I mean, I knew there was a lot, but there is A LOT a lot. It was funny, because the first time my sister and I walked in with the boys before their very first practice, we realized how little we did know about hockey and getting them ready for it!

We both fumbled through putting on the pads and tape and skates and everything else. Thank God my son’s friend’s mom was there to help. Thanks, Tiffany!

Once they both got onto the ice, they immediately began to fall, even while using the supportive bars and chairs. Neither of them had been ice skating before. Titan began to move forward a bit on the ice with a chair, pushing with his little feet. Holden began to shoot forward with the support bar. Both of them began learning how to fall, and that it’s okay to fall. They realized they wouldn’t get hurt after falling with all of that padding on. So they became fearless.

After about a half hour, Holden began skating without any support at all! He was bound and determined to learn, listening and watching closely to the coaches, taking their advice, and skating (and falling) like a champ! Titan began moving faster with the chair, and learning that there will always be someone there to catch him if he fell. It was magical to watch their little faces light up with glee when they finally understood how it all worked!

Their third practice of the season is tonight, and I couldn’t be more excited to see how they impress me again.

Keep up with me on The Sunny Morning Show weekdays from 6-10AM on Sunny 101.9.
