MARQUETTE, MI - (Great Lakes Radio News) - Marquette County Sheriff Mike Lovelace is reminding drivers to use their seat belts as they hit the road this Memorial Day holiday weekend. Sheriff Lovelace joined The SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to spread the word of the local law enforcement involvement in the current national "Click It or Ticket" seat belt use enforcement effort. He also talked about some common sense driving safety tips to keep in mind as drivers are out there going into the upcoming holiday weekend. Sheriff Lovelace reminded motorists that the residual damages caused by not wearing a seat belt and getting into a crash are much too high to risk not wearing one for any reason. Deer Habitat Grants Awarded by DNR

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) Six U.P. conservation organizations will receive Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative grants from the DNR this year. The projects, totaling $50,000, will assist the improvement of deer habitat in Alger, Dickinson, Iron, Mackinac, Menominee and Ontonagon counties. Groups receiving funding include: U.P. Whitetails, Whitetails Unlimited, the Dickinson Conservation District, Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County and others. The program helps non-governmental organizations improve white-tailed deer habitat in the U.P. and is funded by the state’s Deer Range Improvement Fund. It requires the projects be located on non-state-owned land, including private property and Commercial Forest Act-enrolled land. Marinette Marine Dedicates New Building

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) Officials with Marinette Marine Corporation dedicated a new 29,000-square-foot ship assembly building at the shipyard yesterday in Marinette, WI. The new building is part of a $74 million investment at the company focusing on streamlining production and increasing efficiencies. The new Grand Module Construction facility will be used to weld together sections of large ships, and will allow for year around production regardless of the weather. Downtown Marquette Accident Update

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) Marquette City Police have released an update in their investigation into a three-vehicle accident that happened last Friday in downtown Marquette. The accident happened around 4:40 p.m. on the 200 block of Washington Street when a westbound vehicle, driven by Ariel Williamson of Marquette, went out of control and struck two parked cars on the street. Williamson was arrested for reckless driving and lodged in the Marquette County Jail. No injuries were reported. A further review of the case by the County Prosecutor's Office has resulted in charges of Reckless Driving and Possession of Clonezepam, which is a felony authorized against her. Wisconsin Man Sentenced for Homocide

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) - A Wisconsin man was sentenced yesterday to over twenty years in prison for a fatal drunk driving accident that killed an Ishpeming boy last fall. Timothy Christ, 28, of Wausaukee was sentenced to 18 years behind bars plus 12 years of extended supervision on one count of Homicide by Intoxicated Use of Vehicle. He was also sentenced to three years, plus an additional three years of extended supervision, on three counts of Operating While Intoxicated-Causing Injury. The accident happened last October 5th when Christ left a Middle Inlet, WI bar just before midnight on US-141 and proceeded north in the southbound lane with his lights off, crashing his pickup truck head-on into an oncoming car. MTU Recieves Funding for Great Lakes Projects

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A pair of Great Lakes restoration projects by Michigan Technological University researchers have been selected for funding by the University of Michigan Water Center. Fifty-four research teams from universities submitted proposals for nearly $570,000 in total funding. One project received a $50,000 grant to study the impact of remediation of mining waste stamp sands along Hills Creek on the Keweenaw Peninsula. The other project that received a $50,000 Water Center grant to develop a geo-spatial database to inform emergency response plans for dealing with oil or chemical spills in the Great Lakes. The U of M Water Center was formed last October to assist development of efficient and effective Great Lakes restoration.
