L’Anse, Michigan — The Miners get on the board first but L’Anse responds with a 3-pointer to give the Purple Hornets a 3-2 lead. Midway through the first quarter the Miners hold a 6-4 lead. With just under two minutes left in the first quarter Negaunee still clings onto a 6-4 lead. The Miners work the ball inside to make it 8-4. The Miners hit a 3-pointer to extend their lead to 11-4.
First Quarter:
Negaunee: 11 L’Anse: 4
Sloppy start to the second quarter as both teams exchange turnovers. Negaunee still holds a 11-4 lead two minutes into the quarter. Miners break the scoring drought with a elbow jumper, pushing their lead to 13-4 with 6:00 minutes left in the second quarter. The Purple Hornets go on a 5-point run to pull the game to 13-9. After a 3-pointer L’Anse climbs back within one of the Miners, as the score is 13-12. The teams trade buckets and Negaunee maintains the lead 15-14. With just over two minutes left the Purple Hornets take their first lead of the game, 18-17. The Miners connect from deep to retake the lead 20-18. After a slow start to the second quarter, both offenses pick up the pace.

L’Anse continues their 3-point barrage to start the quarter jumping out to a 24-21 lead. The Miners take the lead back, 26-24. With under five minutes left the Miners are down 29-28. After a pair of free throws the Purple Hornets are up 33-30 with 4:05 left in the third quarter. With just over three minutes left in the third quarter, Negaunee is down 36-32. Negaunee hits a buzzer beating 3-pointer to pull the game within one, 40-39.

Early in the fourth quarter it’s 42-41, L’Anse leading the Miners. The Purple Hornets are up six with 4:14 left to go in the game. The Miners hit a lay-up to cut into the lead, they trail 47-43. With 2:07 left to play it’s L’Anse clinging to a 49-43. With 1:15 left to play it’s L’Anse holding a 51-46 edge. The Miners put on the full court press in hopes to get back in the game with under a minute left. With 28 seconds left to go it’s L’Anse 54, Negaunee 46.
L’Anse overcomes a first quarter deficit to hand the Miners their first loss of the season. Negaunee is now 3-1 on the year.
