The Negaunee Miners on Sunny 101.9 WKQS-FM

The Negaunee Miners defeat Iron Mountain, improving to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Iron Mountain, Michigan–The Miners jump out to a 3-0 lead after a free-throw and lay-up. The Negaunee defense has forced two turnovers in the early going to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Miners are up 8-2 with 4:19 left in the first quarter. The Negaunee defense is making it tough on Iron Mountain, as the Miners are up 11-4 with 3:00 left in the first quarter. With 1:15 left in the quarter the Miners are up 15-8. The Mountaineers go on a run to end the first quarter and narrow the deficit.

First quarter:

Negaunee:  15       Iron Mountain: 14

Negaunee strikes first in the second quarter, pushing their lead too 17-14. Both teams are trading buckets as Negaunee holds onto a 17-16 advantage with just over six minutes left in the second quarter. After hitting a 3-pointer the Miners are up 22-16 with 4:30 left in the half. With 3:54 left it’s Negaunee hanging onto a 22-18 lead. The Miners are holding a 23-21 advantage with 2:30 left to play in the second quarter. The Mountaineers have tied the score at 25-25 with under a minute left. Aubri Romback hits a buzzer beating 3-pointer to give the Miners a lead going into the locker room.

Halftime:

Negaunee: 28     Iron Mountain: 25

Negaunee hits one of two from the line to take a 29-25 lead. The Mountaineers hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit, as they trail the Miners 29-27. Midway through the third quarter Iron Mountain takes a 30-29 lead. Turnover continue to plague both teams as the Mountaineers still hold a 30-29 lead with 3:00 minutes left in the third quarter. Both teams continue to battle as Negaunee takes the lead again, 34-32 with a 1:50 to lead. The Miners go on a mini-run to end the third quarter and recapture the lead.

Third quarter:

Negaunee: 39    Iron Mountain: 36

Negaunee gets on the board first in the decisive fourth quarter taking a 41-36 lead. The Mountaineers retake the lead, as they pull ahead 42-41. After a 3-pointer the Miners jump into the drivers seat as they pull ahead 44-42. With 2:28 left to play, Negaunee holds a 45-42 edge. It’s 47-46 with 1:30 left to play, as the Miners cling to a one point lead. Iron Mountain takes a 48-47 lead with a minute left in the game. With 52 seconds left before the final buzzer the Miners hit a pair at the line to recapture the lead, 49-48. With 17 seconds left the Miners have extended their lead to 51-48, as they have hit clutch free throws down the stretch. With five seconds to play Iron Mountain goes to the free throw line to shot three free throws. The Mountaineers make the first and miss the second two.

Negaunee takes it down the stretch as they hit their free throws and their defense holds. The Miners are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Negaunee: 51     Iron Mountain: 49
