Negaunee(53) Easily Defends Home Turf vs Norway(0); Moves on to “MPC Championship” in Ishpeming

20131004_190039Negaunee, MI – Any worry of a “trap-game” last week for the Negaunee Miners was quickly dismissed as Negaunee blew out the Norway Knights 53-0 during their homecoming game.  The Miners dominated right from the get-go, scoring on a 22-yard touchdown reception by Tyler Jandron from quarterback Ryan Syrjala.  Tyler LaJoie also added a nine yard touchdown run for his only score late in the first quarter, as his night was cut short by a shin bruise.  Negaunee never needed him.  Tyler Windahl would take over tailback duties as Zak Harsila & Austin Caya split time at fullback.  The Miners would go on to score 39 points over the next two quarters running the clock, and the Knights, out of town.

Once again, the Negaunee defensive and offensive lines dominated the line of scrimmage.  This gave Miner running backs tons of room, while giving the Knights nowhere to run.  Tyler Windahl stepped in and performed fantastically, racking up 188-yards on 10 carries including three touchdowns.  Ryan Syrjala also took more responsibility offensively as he threw for one touchdown and ran in another.  Austin Caya & Jesse Godfrey each also added some offense, scoring on 59- & 65-yard runs respectively.

Negaunee’s win sets them up for the biggest regular season game since……last year’s week-seven game.  Negaunee will travel to the playgrounds to take on their closest rival in the entire UP:  The 6-0 Ishpeming Hematites.  As the person calling the Miner games this season, I have to say, I’ve been looking forward to this game since week two of the season.  Many are referring to the contest as the de facto “MPC championship” seeing as neither of these teams are expected to lose another conference game this season.  This game will feature the two best teams in the MPC, and also the two most highly touted players in the UP:  Tyler LaJoie of Negaunee & Alex Briones of Ishpeming.  These two have been lighting up scoreboards all season long and are finally going to get to share the same field.  Ishpeming, who won the division-7 state title last season, will have revenge in their minds as they were robbed of a perfect season in 2012 during a 20-6 loss @ Negaunee.

If you can’t make it out to this game, I highly recommend that you tune into SunnyFM @ 101.9 and listen.  This will surely be a game to remember.  My partner Jesse Anderson and myself will have the call.  Pregame starts at 6:30pm EST and kickoff is at 7.  Go Miners!
