Michigan State Police and the Alger County Sheriff’s Department are investigating an apparent drowning in Lake Superior near Grand Marais. Reports say that the body of an elderly woman was recovered from the lake by the Grand Marais pier after authorities were called out about a report of something floating in the water just after 8 o’clock yesterday morning. The body has been identified to be that of 89-year-old Grand Marais resident, Rose Mary Marshall. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death, but authorities say no foul play is suspected.
A preliminary exam is set for Wednesday, July 18th for two Schoolcraft County residents arrested on larceny charges. 24–year–old Michael Olsen and 22–year–old Samantha Jenerou, both of Manistique, have been arrested in connection with break-ins at six different residences in Schoolcraft County. The charges against both of them include first–degree home invasion, four counts of second–degree home invasion and three counts of larceny of $1,000 to $20,000, plus a series of related charges. They were arraigned on the charges in 93rd District Court and are being held in the Schoolcraft County Jail on $25,000 bond each.
An Upper Peninsula man who confronted friends and neighbors in an incident early in May in Iron Mountain, then held police at bay overnight, has pleaded guilty to a felonious assault charge. 63-year old Michael Vanderlin was arrested the next morning, when he surrendered to Iron Mountain police officers. Vanderlin admitted possession of a rifle used in the incident to police who searched his residence. He is to be sentenced on the charge on August 13th.
Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin says she will seek counseling as directed by the Board of Regents for alcohol abuse. Martin told the ‘Detroit Free Press’ she does not have a drinking problem, but was arrested before taking the job for drunk driving. She will be donating her raise this year of nearly nine-thousand dollars to a campus alcohol awareness program.
