Electrical Fire at the Empire Mine

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Cliffs Natural Resources officials say the investigation is continuing into the cause of a recent electrical fire at the main substation at the Empire Mine.

The fire resulted in loss of electrical power to the Empire mining area and plant. There were no injuries.

A small fire as a result of the electrical failure was responded to by Richmond Township Fire Department. Company officials say there was no loss of pellet production at the Empire as the plant was in a planned shutdown.

The Tilden Mine and processing facilities were not affected and are currently operating as scheduled.
