MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) - A reception was held last night by the mining firm Rio Tinto in Marquette to provide the local business community an update on progress on the Kennecott Eagle Mine in western Marquette County.
Company officials say the mine is expected to begin production in early 2014 and is currently creating 500 construction jobs and will generate at least 230 jobs during the operation of the mine.
Speaking at the event last evening, Rio Tinto President Adam Burley said the mine is also projected to produce 300 million pounds of nickel and 250 million pounds of copper.
Company officials say they plan to hold more update sessions as the mine moves into regular production.
