NMU Approves First Academic Major In Native Studies In Michigan

Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Northern Michigan University has formally approved the first Native American Studies academic major in the state.

The NMU Board of Trustees today approved a recommendation by its academic affairs committee to build upon the previously established academic minor.

Classes in the new four-year program will begin in fall of 2016.

The board also approved a five-year master plan for campus facility improvements.

The top three priority projects are: renovation to the Learning Resources Center, an Academic Teaching and Business Innovation Center addition to the McClintock Building and the renovation of Cohodas Hall.

The board also approved the previously negotiated agreement between NMU and the administrative/professional Union, UAW Local 2178 and elected Sook Wilkinson chair and Thomas Zurbuchen vice chair for calendar year 2016.
