Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) –  State Representative Scott Dianda is calling on the Federal government to save hunting camps in the western U.P.

The Calumet Democrat is asking the feds renew hunting camp leases under the U.S. Forest Service’s Recreation Residence Program or grandfather in the remaining 104 lease agreements for hunting camps in the Ottawa National Forest.

UPPCO owned the land in the 1950’s and offered residents the chance to lease parcels.

That land was sold to the Forest Service in 1992 and they offered existing leaseholders the chance to sign 25-year non-renewable leases.

    Those leases are now expiring.

Dianda is asking federal officials to renew those leases and treat the hunting camps the same as single-family cabins they allow in designated areas of national forests.
