Milliken was also known as a longtime supporter of womens rights and environmental issues. Reports say she recently had been receiving hospice care after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
William and Helen Milliken married in 1945. She was Michigan’s first lady beginning in 1969, when William Milliken, then Lt. Governor, became Governor when Governor Romney resigned from office to serve in President Richard Nixon’s cabinet.
Milliken was elected three times after that, serving until 1982.
