Production Curtail Planned for Empire Mine
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Cliffs Natural Resources Incorporated has announced plans to curtail production next year at the Empire Mine in Marquette County.
The curtailment, which is scheduled to begin early in the second quarter of 2013, is part of an overall plan by the company to match iron ore production with market demand.
According to a release from Cliffs’, there is also a decision to idle production at Northshore Mining in Minnesota and delay portions of its Bloom Lake expansion in Quebec.
The company says the production curtailment at the Empire Mine will come in the form of an extended summer shutdown and the overall production rollbacks are driven by increased iron ore pricing volatility and lower North American steelmaking utilization rates.
