One Dead After Accident in Houghton County

State Police at Calumet post respond to two-vehicle accidentMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)State Police at the Calumet Post say a Pelkie woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Houghton County last night.

The accident happened on Askel Road in Portage Township around 6:30 p.m.  Troopers say 52-year-old Rick VanAlstine of Pelkie was eastbound on Askel Road when he swerved to avoid a deer that jumped out on the roadway.

VanAlstine’s vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with an oncoming vehicle driven by 65-year-old Gloria Karinen of Pelkie. Karinen was pronounced dead at the scene and VanAlstine was taken to Portage View Hospital in Hancock and was later transferred to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment.

The investigation into the accident is continuing.
