Wisconsin Governor Walker’s State of the State Address
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker delivered his State of the State address yesterday and discussed proposed legislation watched closely in a portion of the western U.P.
During his speech, Walker called on lawmakers to quickly pass legislation that would ease regulations so a new iron ore mine could be opened near Hurley, Wisconsin. Walker said such a mine would be a “lifeline” to people in Iron County, where the unemployment rate is nearly 12 percent.
Gogebic Taconite planned to open the iron ore mine, but it pulled its plans last year after the Legislature could not agree on a way to streamline the permitting process. According to Walker, the new mine could result in a $1.5 billion investment and the creation of up to 700 jobs.
The latest version of the bill, making changes to rules and requirements for opening new mines in Wisconsin, is being rolled out in Madison today and legislative leaders say they want to pass the measure by early March.
