RTW Protest Cost Michigan Taxpayers Over $1 Million
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) –
The cost for security during last month’s right-to-work protest at the State Capitol was $1.46 million dollars, according to a new report from the state.
About 500 troopers, some of whom were brought in from the Upper Peninsula, were at the capitol, which amounts to almost half the entire state police force. Capt. Greg Zarotney of the Michigan State Police say that the strong presence resulted in no injuries requiring hospitalization and no significant damage to any buildings.
He does say however that the effort did not come cheap. Regular pay for the troopers cost taxpayers $464,000 dollars. Overtime costs were $901,000 and miscellaneous costs, such as food and lodging, totaled $98,000.
