Upgrade to Michigan Capitol's security will not include metal detectorsMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)It appears that the effort by officials at the State Capitol to improve security will not include metal detectors.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, more than half of state capitols across the country use metal detectors. But State Senator John Pappageorge of downstate Oakland County says Michigan won’t be added to the list.

Pappageorge is a member of a legislative committee looking into whether the Michigan Capitol should install detectors, but he says they concluded it was too costly, adding “that’s a very expensive proposition…when you look at (the state’s) priorities, it does not get up high enough in my opinion.”

The state did upgrade the weapons carried by the Sergeants in the Capitol, however.
