MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)Michigan’s senior U.S. senator, Carl Levin, says he will not seek re-election in 2014.

The Detroit Democrat is the longest serving senator from Michigan, having been in the Senate since 1979. He also chairs the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee.

Levin says the decision was extremely difficult but he feels he can “best serve my state and nation by concentrating in the next two years on the challenging issues before us that I am in a position to help address; in other words, by doing my job without the distraction of campaigning for re-election.”

His decision marks the first open Senate seat in Michigan in almost 20 years, which means Democrats and Republicans are likely to begin jockeying for the job.
