New Copper Mine to Open in Gogebic County

Great Lakes Radio News UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)A new copper mine has been granted permits to open in the western Upper Peninsula.

The Department of Environmental Quality this week approved the final permits for the proposed Orvana Corporation Copperwood copper mine near Wakefield in Gogebic County.

DEQ officials say the agreement includes several environmental mitigation requirements, including construction of 13,700 lineal feet of stream channel, 18.3 acres of wetland and preservation of 810 acres of undeveloped land, including 596 acres of wetlands.

Orvana said it will create $2 billion in economic activity for the region over the next 20 years.
