Great Lakes Radio News UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)A state lawmaker is proposing banning minors in Michigan from using tanning beds.
House Democrat Jim Townsend of Royal Oak said his legislation is patterned after the way Michigan prohibits stores from selling cigarettes to minors. It would make it a misdemeanor for a tanning salon owner to allow patrons under age 18 to tan.
Violators could be fined $150.
Mlive.com reports that supporters of the ban point to studies that show people who start indoor tanning before they’re 35 have a 75 percent higher risk for developing melanoma, a type of skin cancer.
Opponents argue the actual rate of those who develop cancer is low and contend that medical and in-home units account for most of the risk, not commercial tanning beds.
